P2i has revealed that three million pairs of shoes have been treated with its Ion-Mask technology since its launch in 2008 and its production capacity is now set to double with the relocation of its processing facility in Dongguan, China.

“The move to the new facility will enable us to double our processing capacity while optimising throughput and maintaining great technical effect,” said Dr Stephen Coulson, CTO at P2i. “Our success with Ion-Mask is not only demonstrated by the sheer number of shoes processed, but also the commitment from brands as they roll out the technology onto an increasingly range of products – including hats and gloves.”

The company’s patented plasma technique produces an ultra-thin polymer coating on the surface of treated products, which lowers the surface energy so that water forms beads and simply rolls off.

“The Ion-Mask process is different to traditional water repellent finishes as it can be applied to fully assembled products rather than just the fabrics - ensuring maximum levels of protection when compared to the treatment of individual components,”

P2i’s technology originated as a project with the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) to make soldiers’ protective clothing more effective against chemical attack and the company went full circle and delivered its first military clothing system back to the MOD in 2010. The company now works with military and protective clothing manufacturers, as well as institutional organisations such as accident & emergency, mail delivery, police and fire services, in addition to companies in the wider sportswear, footwear, textiles and filtration industries.
